What strategies do you use to maintain your health and well-being?

Before I start, I’m betting that people who read my blog have better answers than me. It’s usually the case. I enjoy the comments and it’s eye-opening.

I was a martial artist for years. I learned that you need balance in your life. Mine are Spirit, Mind and Body. I guess I knew it all along, but that experience put words to it.

For Spirit, you need a relationship with God at the forgiveness level. Others believe in their own thing.

For Mind, I take University classes, write extensively, and keep learning. I try to find patterns and opportunities as they present themselves to me in life. You have to challenge your mind or it will become stale. I also learn foreign languages from the dreaded Duolingo.

For Body, I work out six days a week. I bike the mountains, lift weights, Tai Chi, golf and keep myself moving. If you don’t, your body starts the process of decay. At my age, it’s already happening.

The other thing I do is stay away from people who make my life miserable. I don’t have that much time left and spending it with those who are unpleasant isn’t worth it.

  1. Daily bicycle ride, 20 minutes minimum, weather permitting.

Upper body flies with 5lb freeweights, 25 minutes, 3 times a week.

Mow back lawn, 100’ X 75’ every 8th day in growing season.

Mow front lawn, 75’ X 85’ day after back lawn.

Trim 120 feet of hedge, rake magnolia leaves as required.

Edger, string trimmer, leaf blower . . . anything to lube the joints.

Read, write, and annoy woman who’s been following me around since 1961.

Eat very light evening meal, often only a slice of bread or piece of fruit.

Cerebral calisthenics include close-order drill for nouns, verbs, gerunds, participles, adjectives, slanguage, and other troublemakers, especially adverbs.  For formal occasions, rhyming quatrains or sonnets, sometimes square dancing, maybe some tap and even a bit of break dancing just for S & Gs.  No Macarena, tho.  Cha-cha . . . o.k. But no salsa.

Enjoy dredging innocent theses through the slums on the wrong side of the tracks to see how they react, then resuscitate ‘em with spicy bits from French, Spanish, Italian, Pilipino, and country Southern.  Refuse to express myself the same way most Murkans do. Make up my own metaphors, aphorisms, and cliches.

Then after exposing my prejudices, biases, and secret fantasies to the glaring light of reality, I whip ‘em back into their little pens with large doses of mea culpas, self-recriminations, and a shot of Jameson’s, water side.  Maybe Bacardi if I have any fresh-cut lemon or lime. Gotta be prior to 1500, tho, ‘cuz I take my statin at bedtime.

Always wake from 5 to 6 hours’ sleep feeling refreshed and ready to do sumpin.  Avoid morphing into a potted fern or sacrificial houseplant any way I can.
